Biography

Eduardo Schaerer Vera y Aragón was born on December 2, 1873, in Caazapá, Paraguay, to a Swiss family. He grew up in a country still healing from the devastating War of the Triple Alliance, which had ended shortly before his birth and greatly reduced Paraguay's population. Despite these tough times, Schaerer built a career in business, journalism, and politics, ultimately becoming president. He died on November 12, 1941, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Schaerer started in public life as a businessman and publisher before officially joining politics with the Liberal Party. He served as mayor of Asunción from 1908 to 1911, gaining popular support and administrative skills. His term as mayor coincided with a phase of modernization in the city, making him known as an effective administrator and helping him gain national recognition.

In 1912, Schaerer briefly served as Minister of the Interior from March 22 to August 15 before becoming Paraguay's president. He held the presidency from 1912 to 1916, representing the Liberal Party, which had led Paraguayan politics since 1904. During his presidency, he focused on stabilizing finances, attracting foreign investment, and modernizing state institutions. Given Paraguay's reliance on agricultural exports, Schaerer worked to strengthen economic connections with neighboring countries and international markets.

After his presidency, Schaerer remained active in politics. He was President of the Senate in 1919 and 1920 and served as a senator from 1921 to 1940, nearly two decades. His long time in the legislature allowed him to shape Paraguayan policy during the turbulent years around the Chaco War with Bolivia in the early 1930s. In 1925, he founded the newspaper La Tribuna, which became a key daily newspaper in Paraguay's history, showing his lasting dedication to public dialogue and the media.

His work in both politics and journalism made Schaerer a notable figure of his time in Paraguay. His Swiss roots put him among the immigrant communities that greatly contributed to Paraguay's commercial and intellectual life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Although he died in exile in Buenos Aires in 1941, his impact on Paraguayan institutions, especially through La Tribuna, lasted far beyond his political career.

Before Fame

Eduardo Schaerer was born in Caazapá in 1873, just four years after the War of the Triple Alliance, a conflict that left Paraguay with a much smaller population and a broken economy. Growing up as the country was rebuilding, Schaerer became interested in business and public service. His Swiss roots linked him to a community of immigrants who were playing a big part in reviving Paraguay's economy.

Before he got into politics, Schaerer made a name for himself as a businessman and publisher, which gave him both financial success and social influence. When he became mayor of Asunción in 1908, it was his first official role in government. Over the next three years, he managed the capital's affairs well and gained national recognition within the Liberal Party, which helped pave his way to the presidency.
