Biography

George Thompson (26 March 1839 – March 1876) was an English civil and military engineer from Greenwich, England, who became a key foreign technical expert in Paraguay during the nineteenth century. His career is mainly linked to the Paraguayan War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), where Paraguay fought Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Thompson advanced to a senior role in the Paraguayan military engineering corps, overseeing fortification works and other defensive structures at a time when Paraguay was up against overwhelming forces.

Before Fame

Thompson was born in Greenwich in 1839, a time when Britain was producing many trained civil engineers whose skills were needed around the world. The growth of railways, canals, and military fortifications during the Victorian era created a group of skilled engineers who often found work overseas. Thompson probably received formal engineering training in Britain before heading to South America, where the government of Francisco Solano López was actively hiring foreign technical experts to modernize Paraguay's military and civil infrastructure in the years leading up to the war.

  • Served as the chief military engineer of the Paraguayan armed forces during the War of the Triple Alliance
  • Directed the construction and maintenance of major Paraguayan fortifications, including the strategically critical fortress at Humaitá
  • Authored 'The War in Paraguay' (1869), a detailed historical and military account that became a foundational source on the conflict
  • Attained the rank of colonel in the Paraguayan army, reflecting his central role in the country's military operations
