Biography

Alonso Verdugo de Castilla, 3rd Count of Torrepalma, was born on September 3, 1706, in Alcalá la Real, a town in the province of Jaén in southern Spain. He was part of the Spanish nobility and made a name for himself in both literature and diplomacy in eighteenth-century Europe. His life coincided with important changes in Spain, including the establishment of Bourbon rule after the War of the Spanish Succession.

Verdugo balanced his aristocratic responsibilities with his interest in writing, aligning himself with the intellectual movements of his time. He was involved with literary academies and contributed to the poetry scene in early eighteenth-century Spain, a time when writers were navigating between the old baroque styles and new neoclassical influences from France and Italy. His poetry showed a cultivated style shaped by his noble upbringing and his exposure to European court life.

In his diplomatic career, Verdugo de Castilla represented Spanish interests abroad, which took him to the Italian peninsula. His diplomatic duties brought him into contact with European politics during the reign of Philip V and his successors, a period when Spain was actively realigning its power in Europe. He was inducted into the Order of Calatrava, one of Spain's most prestigious military orders, recognizing his status in Spanish nobility and his service to the Crown.

Verdugo passed away on March 27, 1767, in Turin, the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, ruled by the House of Savoy at the time. His death in that northern Italian city highlights the extensive travels and assignments that marked his later years as a representative of the Spanish monarchy. He left a body of poetry that, while not the most famous of his century, contributed to Spanish Enlightenment literature and provides insight into the thoughts of an educated Spanish nobleman of his time.
