Biography
André Morgan Rami Ayew, born on December 17, 1989, in Seclin, France, is a professional footballer who plays as a winger or forward for Dutch Eredivisie club NAC Breda and is the captain of the Ghana national team. In Ghana, he is known as Dede Ayew. He is the second son of Abedi 'Pele' Ayew, a three-time African Footballer of the Year. His brothers, Ibrahim and Jordan, are also professional footballers, making the Ayews a well-known football family in Africa.
Ayew's professional career started unusually early when he joined 1860 Munich in Germany and made his debut at just seven years old. In 2006, he followed his father's path by signing with Marseille. He spent two seasons in their youth academy before making his first-team debut in the 2007-08 season. His development included loan spells with Lorient and Arles-Avignon, where he helped Arles-Avignon get promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time in their history.
In 2010, Ayew returned to Marseille and became a key player under manager Didier Deschamps. During his time with the club, he made over 200 appearances and helped win several trophies, including back-to-back Trophée des Champions and Coupe de la Ligues in 2010 and 2011. His performances at Marseille marked him as one of the rising stars in African football, earning him the BBC African Footballer of the Year award in 2011 and the Ghanaian Footballer of the Year honor.
For Ghana, Ayew's international career has been equally impressive. Despite being born in France, he chose to represent Ghana and has earned 120 caps since his senior debut in 2008. He first gained international attention at the youth level, captaining the under-20 team that won both the 2009 African Youth Championship and the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In his senior career, he has appeared in three FIFA World Cups (2010, 2014, and 2022) and eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments (2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023). He helped Ghana reach the finals in 2010 and 2015, finishing as runners-up both times, and was the top goalscorer in the 2015 tournament.
Before Fame
André Ayew was born into a football family as the son of Abedi Pele, one of Ghana's top players who played for Marseille and won several African Footballer of the Year awards. Growing up in France in a family focused on football, Ayew was around professional football from a very young age. He was influenced by his father's connections and reputation, but also had a natural talent for the game.
He started his career unusually early at 1860 Munich, joining at age seven, which showed his family's dedication to developing his skills from a young age. Later, he moved to Marseille, continuing his family's legacy at his father's former club and getting the chance to train in one of France's best football academies. With his dual French-Ghanaian heritage, he was in a unique position to connect European club football with African international play.
