Biography

David Lekuta Rudisha, MBS (born 17 December 1988) is a retired Kenyan middle-distance runner known for his unmatched dominance in the 800-meter event. Hailing from Kilgoris, Rudisha is widely considered the greatest 800-meter runner ever, holding the world record of 1:40.91 set during his gold medal win at the 2012 London Olympics. He is the only person to have run the 800 meters in under 1:41 seconds, a remarkable achievement that sets him apart in track and field. Rudisha also holds the three fastest times in the 800 meters, each setting a world record when achieved.

Rudisha's athletic journey began at St. Francis Kimuron High School in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, where he built the groundwork for his future success. His international breakthrough took place at the 2006 World Junior Championships, where he won the 800-meter title. This early victory hinted at his future dominance on the world stage, leading to gold medals at both the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics. His performance in London is particularly remembered, as he not only took gold but also set the current world record in what many consider one of the greatest middle-distance races in Olympic history.

Aside from his Olympic wins, Rudisha proved to be a consistent champion in various competitions. He claimed World Championship titles in 2011 and 2015, showing his ability to compete at the top level over many years. He also won titles in the Diamond League in 2010 and 2011 and secured victories at the African Championships in 2008 and 2010. Despite facing challenges later in his career, including injuries, he still managed to win a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, adding to his impressive list of achievements.

Rudisha's excellence was recognized with numerous awards, including the IAAF World Athlete of the Year in 2010 and three consecutive Track & Field News Athlete of the Year awards. His influence wasn’t limited to the 800 meters, as he also holds the world's best time in the 500 meters and the African best for the 600 meters. After retiring from competitive athletics, Rudisha moved into politics and public service. In May 2022, he announced his candidacy as an independent for the Kilgoris Constituency in Kenya. He has also stayed connected to athletics through ambassador roles, including being the World Athletics ambassador for the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
