Biography
Andriy Mykolayovych Shevchenko, born on 29 September 1976 in Yahotyn, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, became one of the most celebrated strikers in football history and is widely seen as Ukraine's greatest player. He is the all-time leading scorer for the Ukraine national team with 48 goals, and his career at top European clubs helped bring global attention to Ukrainian football.
Shevchenko started his professional career with Dynamo Kyiv, winning five Ukrainian league titles and three domestic cups. His standout performances caught the eye of major European clubs, leading to his 1999 move to AC Milan in Italy's Serie A. At Milan, he became one of the continent's most feared forwards, scoring 175 goals and becoming the club's second highest scorer. He won the Serie A title in 2004 and the UEFA Champions League in 2003, and played in two more Champions League finals in 2005 and 2008. His 14 goals in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter Milan make him the rivalry's top scorer. In 2004, he won the Ballon d'Or, cementing his status as the world's best footballer that year.
In 2006, Shevchenko joined Chelsea in the English Premier League and won the FA Cup and League Cup in his first season. After a loan back to AC Milan, he returned to Dynamo Kyiv to finish his playing career. On the international stage, he led Ukraine to the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, their first appearance in the tournament, and also played in UEFA Euro 2012, co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
After retiring, Shevchenko briefly entered politics, running in the October 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary election, though his party did not win seats. He went back to football in 2016 as assistant coach of the Ukraine national team, later becoming head coach until 2021. As manager, he led Ukraine to the round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2020. He is married to Kristen Pazik, and they have children together.
Shevchenko has received various honors from Ukraine for his impact on sport and boosting the country's global profile. These include the Hero of Ukraine award, the Order of the State, the Order of Merit in all three classes, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the Order for Courage, and being named a National Legend of Ukraine. In 2004, he was also listed among FIFA's 125 greatest living footballers during their centenary celebrations.
Before Fame
Andriy Shevchenko was born and grew up in Yahotyn, a small city in Kyiv Oblast, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. He came of age during the collapse of Soviet rule and the early days of Ukraine as an independent nation, a time of major social and economic changes that influenced many young athletes in the area. Dynamo Kyiv scouted him as a child, and he developed his skills at their youth academy, known for producing top football players.
As Shevchenko rose through the Dynamo Kyiv ranks, Ukraine was forming its own football league after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. He quickly stood out as an outstanding talent and became a regular player for Dynamo's first team in the mid-1990s. His performances in the UEFA Champions League, including Dynamo's remarkable run in the 1998-99 season, caught the eye of top European clubs and paved the way for his move to AC Milan.
