Biography
Andrzej Sebastian Duda was born on May 16, 1972, in Kraków, Poland. He finished high school at Jan III Sobieski High School in Kraków and then went on to study law at Jagiellonian University, one of Europe’s oldest universities. He completed his doctorate in legal sciences there and worked as a university teacher, focusing on law, which influenced his political career. He is married to Agata Kornhauser-Duda, and they have one daughter.
Duda began his political career with the Law and Justice party (PiS). He served as a member of the Sejm, Poland's lower house of parliament, from 2011 to 2014. He also briefly served in the European Parliament from 2014 to 2015 before running for president. In the 2015 presidential election, running as the PiS candidate, he defeated the sitting president Bronisław Komorowski in a surprising turn of events. He led in the first round but didn't get an absolute majority, ultimately winning the second round with 51.55% of the vote. After his election, Duda left his PiS party membership on May 26, 2015, following the presidential tradition.
During his presidency, Duda oversaw major political changes in Poland. His election was followed by the PiS party's win in the October 2015 parliamentary elections, giving them full control for the first time in Poland. Critics, including the European Union and international observers, expressed worry that some legislative and judicial reforms by the PiS government were undermining democracy, particularly the independence of the judiciary and public media. Duda faced both domestic and international criticism for signing several controversial laws.
Duda was re-elected in 2020, leading in the first round and then defeating Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski in the runoff with 51.03% of the vote, totaling 10,440,648 votes. His second term was notably marked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Duda actively worked with NATO allies and international partners to support Ukraine’s military and diplomatic efforts, making Poland a leading advocate for Ukraine in Europe. His presidency ended in 2025, covering a decade of significant geopolitical and domestic political changes.
Before Fame
Andrzej Duda grew up in Kraków, a city with deep cultural and academic traditions. He attended Jan III Sobieski High School before going to Jagiellonian University, where he studied law. His focus on legal studies led to an academic career, and he worked as a university teacher, specializing in legal theory and administrative law. This legal background set him apart from many career politicians and helped shape his image as a legally trained professional entering politics.
Duda's political journey began seriously with the Law and Justice party, which became a conservative, nationalist force in Polish politics following the country's shift to democracy after communism. His quick rise through party ranks to a seat in the Sejm and then the European Parliament showed both his personal ambitions and the party's aim to develop credible, professionally trained candidates who could appeal to a wide range of voters.
