Biography
Anni-Frid Synni Lyngstad was born on 15 November 1945 in Bjørkåsen, Ballangen Municipality, Norway, to a Norwegian mother and a German father. She grew up in Torshälla, Sweden, where she developed her musical talents from an early age. Known professionally as Frida, she became one of the most recognizable voices in popular music as a founding member of ABBA, the Swedish pop group that achieved unprecedented global success.
Lyngstad's rise to international stardom began when she joined forces with Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Agnetha Fältskog to form ABBA in the early 1970s. The group's breakthrough came with their victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with "Waterloo," launching them into worldwide fame. As one of the lead singers, Lyngstad contributed her distinctive alto voice to many of ABBA's greatest hits, including "Fernando," "Money, Money, Money," and "I Have a Dream." The group sold over 400 million records worldwide, establishing themselves as one of the best-selling music acts in history.
Throughout ABBA's active years from 1972 to 1982, Lyngstad's personal life became intertwined with the band's story. She married fellow band member Benny Andersson in 1978, though the couple divorced in 1981. Her previous marriage to Ragnar Fredriksson had ended in 1970. The complex personal relationships within the group added emotional depth to their music while also contributing to internal tensions that eventually led to their hiatus.
After ABBA's dissolution, Lyngstad pursued a solo career with varying degrees of success. She released several albums, including "Something's Going On" in 1982, produced by Phil Collins, which achieved commercial success in Europe. However, she gradually stepped back from the music industry, eventually retiring from active recording and performing. Her later years saw her marry Prince Heinrich Ruzzo Reuss of Plauen in 1992, becoming the Dowager Princess Reuss of Plauen following his death in 1999.
In recognition of her contributions to Swedish culture and music, Lyngstad was awarded the Commander 1st class of the Order of Vasa in 2024. Her legacy remains firmly established through ABBA's enduring popularity, which experienced a resurgence through the musical "Mamma Mia!" and the group's 2021 reunion album "Voyage." She continues to be celebrated as one of Sweden's most successful cultural exports and a defining voice of 1970s pop music.
Before Fame
Before achieving international stardom, Lyngstad grew up in Sweden after being born in Norway during World War II. Her early life was marked by the circumstances of her birth, as the daughter of a German soldier and a Norwegian mother. She moved to Sweden as a child and settled in Torshälla, where she began developing her musical abilities.
Lyngstad started her career in the Swedish music scene during the 1960s, performing with local bands and participating in talent competitions. She worked within the dansband and schlager traditions that were popular in Scandinavian music at the time. Her path to fame accelerated when she began collaborating with songwriter and musician Benny Andersson, which eventually led to the formation of ABBA alongside Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus.
