Biography
Ingrida Šimonytė is a Lithuanian economist and politician who has played a key role in Lithuania's economic and political growth since the 2000s. Born on November 15, 1974, in Vilnius, she studied at Vilnius University, earning a degree in business in 1996 and a master's degree in 1998. She also spent time at the Stockholm School of Economics, where she gained knowledge in international economics.
Šimonytė started her career in public service, working in the tax division of the Ministry of Finance until 2004. Her skills in fiscal policy and taxation led her to become the Minister of Finance in 2009 under Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, during a tough economic period for Lithuania after the global financial crisis. In this role, she carried out strict but needed economic reforms to stabilize Lithuania's finances, which paved the way for the country to adopt the euro in 2015.
After leaving the finance ministry in 2012, Šimonytė moved into academic and financial roles, serving as deputy chairperson of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania and chairperson of Vilnius University Council. She became a professor of economics at the Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science and taught public finance at ISM University of Management and Economics, helping to educate future economists and policymakers.
Returning to active politics in 2016, Šimonytė won a parliamentary seat representing the Antakalnis constituency as an independent candidate. She became nationally known through her 2019 presidential campaign, where she got the Homeland Union nomination and won the first round of voting, but lost to Gitanas Nausėda in the runoff. After the 2020 parliamentary elections, she became Prime Minister, leading Lithuania through the COVID-19 pandemic and keeping strong support for Ukraine during the Russian invasion. Her time as Prime Minister ended in 2024, and she now leads the Opposition while still serving as a Member of Parliament.
Before Fame
Growing up in Soviet Lithuania during the 1970s and 1980s, Šimonytė saw the country gain independence in 1990 when she was just 16. She was a student at Vilnius Žirmūnai Gymnasium during this changing time and went on to Vilnius University in the mid-1990s as Lithuania was forming new democratic institutions and a market economy. This experience during Lithuania's change from Soviet rule influenced her views on economic policy and public administration.
Her rise to prominence started with her expertise in taxation and public finance, areas critical for newly independent Lithuania as it developed modern fiscal systems. Her education and early career in the tax division at the Ministry of Finance gave her a strong understanding of government revenue systems, which was invaluable when Lithuania faced economic challenges needing sophisticated policy solutions.
