Biography
Yaroslava Vyacheslavovna Shvedova is a former professional tennis player from Kazakhstan, born on September 12, 1987, in Moscow. She initially played for Russia before switching to represent Kazakhstan in 2008. Throughout her career, Shvedova found success in both singles and doubles, reaching her highest singles ranking of world No. 25 on October 29, 2012, and climbing to No. 3 in doubles on February 22, 2016.
In Grand Slam tournaments, Shvedova reached the singles quarterfinals three times – at the 2010 and 2012 French Open events and at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. She fared even better in doubles, winning two Grand Slam titles with American partner Vania King at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships and the 2010 US Open, becoming one of the top doubles players of her time.
During her time on the WTA Tour, Shvedova won one singles title and 13 doubles titles. She also claimed one singles and one doubles title at WTA 125 tournaments and four singles and three doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. Her ability to excel in both singles and doubles showed her well-rounded tennis skills and court strategy.
Shvedova holds a special place in tennis history as one of only seven players to achieve a golden set during the Open era. This remarkable feat happened at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, where she won every point in a set against Sara Errani. It stands as the only golden set recorded at a Grand Slam, marking an extraordinary moment in her career and ensuring her spot in the tennis record books.
Before Fame
Born in Moscow during the last years of the Soviet Union, Shvedova started her tennis career representing Russia, following the usual path for young, talented players from the strong tennis programs in the former Soviet states. The late 1980s and early 1990s brought political changes that affected the careers of many athletes from this region.
As professional tennis grew worldwide in the 2000s, more players began representing countries different from their birth nations, often following family ties or looking for better support. Shvedova's choice to represent Kazakhstan in 2008 fits this wider trend in international tennis, where skilled players could help develop tennis programs in growing countries while advancing their professional goals.
