Biography

Elías Antonio "Tony" Saca González was born on March 9, 1965, in Usulután, El Salvador. He studied at Central American University in San Salvador, laying the groundwork for his future in journalism and politics. Before stepping into politics, Saca was a well-known figure in Salvadoran media, working as a journalist and later becoming a successful businessman in the communications industry.

Saca's political career peaked when he was elected President of El Salvador in 2004 with the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), serving until 2009. During his presidency, he focused on economic growth and keeping strong ties with the United States. His administration encouraged foreign investment and launched various social programs to reduce poverty. He was the last ARENA president before the party lost power to the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) in later elections.

In 2007, Saca received the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic from Spain for his diplomatic work. He is married to Ana Ligia Mixco Sol de Saca, and during his time as president, she served as First Lady, both actively participating in social and charitable activities across El Salvador.

In his years after the presidency, Saca faced significant legal problems. He was charged with corruption and money laundering related to his time in office. These charges led to his conviction and a minimum 10-year prison sentence, which he is currently serving. The legal proceedings uncovered allegations of embezzling public funds and illicit enrichment during his presidency, heavily impacting his public image and placing him among several former Central American leaders facing corruption charges recently.

Before Fame

Growing up in Usulután during the 1970s and 1980s, Saca lived through El Salvador's civil war, which ran from 1979 to 1992. Experiencing such intense political and social turmoil probably sparked his later interest in politics and communications. He went to Central American University, where he learned the skills and made the connections needed to start a career in media.

Saca began his career in journalism and broadcasting, eventually moving into owning businesses in the communications field. His success in media gave him both a platform and the financial means to enter politics. His visibility as a journalist helped him become well-known among Salvadoran voters. This background in communications came in handy when he decided to run for political office, as he knew how to effectively reach and sway public opinion.
