Biography
Marcelo Arévalo González, born on October 17, 1990, in Sonsonate, El Salvador, is one of the most successful tennis players in Central America. He reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles on November 11, 2024. His best singles ranking was No. 139 in April 2018, making him the highest-ranked Salvadoran tennis player in both singles and doubles. As a junior player, Arévalo showed great potential, reaching No. 8 in the world rankings and winning seven singles and doubles titles on the ITF Junior Circuit. This early success helped him transition to professional tennis, where he made history for his country and region. In 2018, he broke into the top 100 in doubles rankings and won his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open with Mexican partner Miguel Ángel Reyes-Varela. This victory vaulted him into the top 50 and started his rise in international tennis. After playing with different partners, Arévalo teamed up with Dutch player Jean-Julien Rojer in 2022. Their successful partnership led to their first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 2022, making Arévalo the first Central American man to win a doubles major championship. Teaming up with Rojer brought Arévalo into the doubles top 10 and resulted in multiple ATP finals appearances. In 2024, he won another Grand Slam at Roland Garros with Croatian player Mate Pavić. His steady excellence in professional tennis earned him the title of El Salvador's Male Sportsman of the Year in December 2024. Over his career, Arévalo has won 16 ATP Tour doubles titles and reached a Grand Slam final in mixed doubles at the 2021 US Open with Mexican partner Giuliana Olmos. His Davis Cup success has helped put Salvadoran tennis on the international map.
Before Fame
Growing up in Sonsonate, El Salvador, Arévalo got into tennis at a time when the sport didn't have much infrastructure or professional opportunities in Central America. Tennis programs in the region were still developing, which meant that most promising players had to look abroad for training and competition to reach top levels. Arévalo's journey to professional tennis meant overcoming major geographical and resource challenges that players from established tennis countries rarely deal with. His success in his junior career, reaching No. 8 in world rankings, showed his exceptional talent and paved the way for his notable professional accomplishments.
