Biography

Ariel Henry (born November 6, 1949) is a Haitian neurosurgeon and politician who was the acting Prime Minister of Haiti from July 2021 to April 2024, during one of the most turbulent periods in the country's modern history. Born in Port-au-Prince, Henry pursued his medical education abroad, studying at the University of Montpellier 1 in France and later at Loma Linda University in California. He specialized in neurosurgery and became one of Haiti's leading medical professionals before entering politics.

Henry's political journey took a dramatic turn after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021. Two days before his death, Moïse had named Henry as Prime Minister, though he had not yet been officially sworn in. After the president's murder, Henry took on the role of acting Prime Minister and, with no president, effectively became the country's chief executive. He led the Council of Ministers and also served as acting Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities.

Henry's time in office was marked by growing gang violence, political instability, and economic collapse. Armed gangs took over more territory in Port-au-Prince and other areas, greatly reducing government authority. His administration was criticized for failing to restore order or address the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of Haitians. The security situation got so bad that large parts of the capital were under gang control, disrupting basic services and forcing thousands to flee their homes.

Henry became involved in controversy over the circumstances of Moïse's assassination. Investigators suspected a link between Henry and Joseph-Félix Badio, one of the alleged masterminds behind the presidential murder. Henry's refusal to fully cooperate with authorities on the case led to questions about his possible involvement. These allegations, along with his government's inability to handle the security crisis, weakened his standing and led to calls for his resignation.

Under growing pressure and stuck outside Haiti due to the security issues, Henry announced his resignation on March 11, 2024. He officially stepped down on April 24, 2024, when the Transitional Presidential Council was set up to steer the country toward democratic elections. His outgoing cabinet chose Finance Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert as interim Prime Minister. Henry's departure ended nearly three years of leadership during one of Haiti's most difficult periods since its independence.

Before Fame

Henry's rise to prominence started with his pursuit of medical excellence at a time when few Haitians had access to advanced education. Growing up in Port-au-Prince during the mid-20th century, he experienced Haiti's political turmoil under the Duvalier dictatorship while focusing on his studies. His decision to study medicine abroad showed both personal ambition and the lack of educational opportunities in Haiti back then.

His medical training at top institutions in France and the United States placed him among Haiti's intellectual elite. Neurosurgery, one of the most challenging fields in medicine, was particularly rare in Haiti, making Henry's skills essential to the country's healthcare system. His medical career made him a respected professional before political circumstances pushed him into national leadership.
