Biography
Jovenel Moïse was a Haitian businessman and politician who was the 48th president of Haiti from February 2017 until his assassination in July 2021. He was born on June 26, 1968, in Trou-du-Nord, a town in northeastern Haiti. Moïse went to the Collège Canado-Haïtien and later Quisqueya University. Before politics, he became a successful entrepreneur, known in Haiti for his business ventures like banana production and other agricultural businesses.
Moïse entered politics through the Haitian Tèt Kale Party (PHTK), founded by former president Michel Martelly. He won the November 2016 presidential election after a long and contested process that included a canceled first round in 2015 due to fraud allegations. His campaign focused on agricultural development, job creation, and economic modernization, using his business background to attract voters wanting economic stability.
His presidency faced many challenges and increasing political crisis. Haiti saw widespread protests, with people demanding his resignation over claims of corruption, economic issues, and worsening security. The country dealt with severe fuel shortages, rising gang violence, and much of the country outside government control. Opposition accused Moïse of having authoritarian tendencies, especially when he ruled by decree after parliament's terms expired in January 2020.
The political situation worsened with disputes over the length of his presidential term. The opposition argued his term ended in February 2021, but Moïse said he had another year, causing a constitutional crisis. International partners, including the U.S., initially supported him, but pressure grew as security and democracy weakened.
On July 7, 2021, Moïse was assassinated at his home in Pétion-Ville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince. The attack, which also seriously injured his wife Martine Moïse, involved foreign mercenaries and Haitian nationals. His murder led to a deeper political crisis in Haiti, with unclear succession. The assassination investigation uncovered a complex plot with multiple international players, but many questions about the motive and leaders remain unanswered.
Before Fame
Growing up in Trou-du-Nord during the final years of the Duvalier dictatorship, Moïse saw Haiti shift from authoritarian rule to democracy in the 1980s and 1990s. After finishing his education, he focused on building businesses, particularly in agriculture, which connected him to rural communities and Haiti's economic issues. His success as an entrepreneur, especially in banana farming, caught the attention of political circles.
His rise in politics picked up speed thanks to his ties with Michel Martelly's administration and the PHTK party. Moïse's business experience and outsider status appealed to those looking for alternatives to the traditional political elites. His agricultural projects and rural ties made him a candidate who understood Haiti's mainly rural population and economic needs.
