Biography

Arjen Robben, born on 23 January 1984 in Bedum, Netherlands, is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a winger and is widely considered one of the greatest players of his generation. Renowned for his explosive pace, precise dribbling, and powerful long-range shots, Robben built a career spanning two decades at the highest levels of European club football. His signature move — cutting inside from the right flank onto his left foot before unleashing a low, curling shot — became one of the most recognizable and feared actions in modern football, even when opponents knew exactly what was coming.

Robben began his professional career at Groningen, where he was named player of the year for the 2000–01 Eredivisie season as a teenager. He then moved to PSV Eindhoven, earning the Netherlands' Young Player of the Year award and winning an Eredivisie title before attracting interest from Europe's elite clubs. In 2004, after extended transfer negotiations, he signed for Chelsea in the English Premier League. Despite an injury delaying his debut, Robben proved integral to two consecutive Premier League title-winning sides under manager José Mourinho, and was named Premier League Player of the Month in November 2004. He was also honored with the Bravo Award during this period, recognizing him as one of Europe's most outstanding young players.

After his time at Chelsea, Robben joined Real Madrid in a transfer worth approximately €35 million, adding another league title to his collection before moving to Bayern Munich in August 2009 for around €25 million. His impact at Bayern was transformative and long-lasting. In his first season, Bayern won the Bundesliga, and over the following years Robben accumulated an extraordinary haul of 20 trophies with the club, including eight Bundesliga titles and five DFB Pokals. His most celebrated moment in Bavaria came in the 2013 UEFA Champions League final, when he scored the winning goal against Borussia Dortmund in the dying minutes. He was named in the Squad of the Season for that competition. In 2010, he was recognized as the German Footballer of the Year and also won the Dutch Footballer of the Year award, reflecting the dual esteem in which he was held. Alongside fellow winger Franck Ribéry, Robben formed a partnership affectionately dubbed 'Robbery' by fans, one of the most potent attacking combinations in Bundesliga history.

On the international stage, Robben represented the Netherlands with distinction across multiple tournaments. He started in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final, in which the Netherlands were defeated by Spain, and consistently ranked among the world's best players during this era. He ranks second all-time among Dutch players for UEFA Champions League goals with 32, and is the all-time Dutch leader in Champions League assists with 19. In 2014, he was included in the FIFPro World XI and the UEFA Team of the Year, and finished fourth in the Ballon d'Or voting. After retiring from professional football with Bayern Munich, Robben briefly came out of retirement to play for his boyhood club Groningen before transitioning into coaching.

Before Fame

Arjen Robben grew up in Bedum, a small municipality in the province of Groningen in the northern Netherlands. He developed his football skills from a young age in the local youth system, eventually joining the academy of FC Groningen, the professional club closest to his hometown. His natural talent was evident early, and he made his professional debut as a teenager, quickly standing out for his speed and technical ability on the ball.

At Groningen, Robben was named player of the year for the 2000–01 season while still a teenager, an achievement that drew attention from larger Dutch clubs. He moved to PSV Eindhoven, one of the Netherlands' top clubs, where he continued his rapid development. At PSV he won the Eredivisie title and was named the Netherlands' Young Player of the Year, confirming his status as one of the most exciting young talents in European football and setting the stage for a move to one of the continent's biggest leagues.
