Biography

Atsuto Uchida is a former Japanese professional footballer who played as a right-back from 2006 to 2020. He was born on March 27, 1988, in Kannami, Japan. Uchida became one of Japan's top defenders of his generation, earning 74 caps for the national team and finding success in European football. His professional career started with Kashima Antlers in 2006, debuting at 17 and quickly becoming a promising player in Japanese football.

During his early years with Kashima Antlers, Uchida won three J1 League titles in four years. His impressive performances caught the attention of European scouts, leading to his transfer to German Bundesliga team FC Schalke 04 in 2010 for €1.3 million. This move marked the start of a successful European career that cemented him as one of Japan's top overseas players.

At Schalke 04, Uchida enjoyed his greatest club success, winning the 2010-11 DFB-Pokal and gaining recognition as one of the Bundesliga's standout performers. His consistent play got him named in the Bundesliga team of the season twice between 2012 and 2014, highlighting his performance among Germany's best defenders. After his time at Schalke, he continued his European career with Union Berlin in the 2. Bundesliga before eventually returning to Japan.

Uchida also had a notable international career, debuting for Japan's national team in January 2008 and scoring two goals in 74 games. He represented Japan in major tournaments such as the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. His career completed a full circle when he returned to Kashima Antlers, his first club, where he played until retiring in 2020.

Before Fame

Atsuto Uchida grew up in Kannami, a small town in Shizuoka Prefecture near Mount Fuji. His early years were a time when Japanese football was on the rise, as the J-League had started in 1993 and was beginning to produce players who would succeed internationally. Clubs like Kashima Antlers offered opportunities for talented young players to hone their skills and eventually move to European leagues.

Uchida came onto the scene when Japanese players were starting to gain recognition in European football, following trailblazers like Hidetoshi Nakata and Shinji Ono in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His time at Kashima Antlers, one of Japan's top clubs, gave him the training and experience he needed to turn professional at a young age.
