Biography
Nicolas Julio Nkoulou Ndoubena was born on 27 March 1990 in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He became one of Africa's top centre-backs, playing for his nation with distinction while having a successful club career in Europe's top leagues. His professional path started in France with AS Monaco, where he proved himself as a promising defender before moving to Olympique de Marseille in 2011. At Marseille, Nkoulou won the Coupe de la Ligue during the 2011-12 season, marking his first major trophy. His strong performances and leadership made him a key part of the club's defense. After five years with Marseille, Nkoulou moved to Olympique Lyonnais in 2016, looking for new challenges. However, his time at Lyon didn't go as planned, and he left after one season for Italy. In 2017, he joined Torino FC, initially on loan and later in a permanent deal. His time in Serie A showed he could adapt to different tactical setups and leagues. Although he initially did well at Torino, he eventually lost his place and left in 2021 to join Watford FC in the English Premier League. Internationally, Nkoulou earned 75 caps for Cameroon from 2008 to 2017, becoming one of the most capped players of his era. He reached his peak by helping Cameroon win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring a crucial equalizer in the final against Egypt. He played in three FIFA World Cups and three Africa Cup of Nations, showing impressive longevity at the top level. After the 2017 AFCON win, Nkoulou retired from international football but made a surprise return to the national team in September 2022 after being away for five years.
