Biography

Bako Sahaki Sahakyan was born on August 30, 1960, in Khankendi, the main city of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, then part of the Soviet Union. He studied at Artsakh University, where he gained the academic and organizational skills that shaped his political career. Before reaching top political levels, Sahakyan worked in security and military fields, which gave him authority in the fragile post-war setting of Artsakh.

Before Fame

Sahakyan grew up during the last years of Soviet rule, a time disrupted by the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over this disputed region influenced the course of his entire generation. Those who showed skill in security and governance during this difficult time were promoted to leadership roles. His experience in state security and military affairs during and after the first Karabakh War set the stage for his rise through the leadership of the de facto republic.
