Biography

Bartolommeo Berrecci (1480–1537) was an Italian Renaissance architect and sculptor from Pontassieve, a small town near Florence in Tuscany, Italy. He was a key figure in bringing Italian Renaissance architectural ideas to Central Europe, spending most of his career in the Kingdom of Poland. His work greatly influenced the look and architecture of the Polish royal court during a culturally vibrant time.

Before Fame

Berrecci was born in Pontassieve in 1480, when Florence and its surrounding areas were at the heart of European artistic change. The Florentine workshops of the late 1400s trained craftsmen in the classical style of ancient Rome, focusing on proportion, symmetry, and sculptural decoration in architecture. Berrecci probably trained in this setting, learning the principles that defined his later work. He likely worked on projects in Italy before being invited to the Polish court, a trend among Italian artists who found support in the courts of Central and Northern Europe in the early 1500s.
