Biography
Bian Que (407-310 BC) was a famous Chinese doctor during the Warring States period. Born as Qin Yueren in Renqiu, he took the name of the legendary physician Bian Que from the time of the Yellow Emperor, highlighting the extraordinary reputation he gained through his healing skills. People in his time thought he had supernatural diagnostic abilities, making him well-known across the Chinese states.
He introduced groundbreaking diagnostic techniques that remained important for centuries. He was an expert in pulse diagnosis, able to detect illnesses by closely examining a patient's pulse patterns. His methods went beyond the usual practices of his time by systematically observing physical symptoms, patient behavior, and environmental factors. Historical records credit him with performing complex medical procedures, including early forms of surgery and advanced treatment of internal problems.
Bian Que believed in preventing diseases before they became serious. He categorized diseases into different stages and created corresponding treatments. His approach mixed herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage, and dietary advice. The physician traveled widely throughout ancient China, treating both royal families and common people, which helped spread his medical practices.
Despite his fame and contributions to Chinese medicine, Bian Que faced opposition from court physicians who saw his methods as a threat to their status. Historical accounts say his career ended tragically when rival doctors plotted his assassination, fearing his superior abilities would undermine their own standing. His death was a significant loss to ancient Chinese medicine, but his methods and ideas continued to influence it for generations.

Not much is known about the early life of Qin Yueren, but it's believed he was born during the chaotic Warring States period when China was divided into rival kingdoms. Traditional stories say he started as an innkeeper before meeting a mysterious person named Chang Sangjun, who saw his potential and taught him secret medical skills. This meeting reportedly changed him from an ordinary person into an exceptional doctor.
The Warring States period was a time when medical knowledge could grow because ongoing wars led to many injuries, prompting the need for new treatments. Competition among states also led to support for skilled people who could offer valuable services, like doctors who could keep rulers and soldiers healthy. This environment helped talented medical practitioners like Bian Que become known and improve their skills in different areas.
