Biography

Ernesto Teodoro Moneta (1833-1918) was an Italian journalist, nationalist, and peace activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1907. Born in Milan on September 20, 1833, Moneta lived through a significant period in Italian history, from the battles for national unification to the rise of international peace movements in the early 1900s. His career went from revolutionary activism to journalism and eventually to strong pacifist advocacy.

In his early years, Moneta was directly involved in Italy's struggle for independence. At just fifteen, he took part in the Five Days of Milan in 1848, an uprising against Austrian rule that showed his early commitment to Italian nationalism. He continued his military education at the academy in Ivrea and later joined Giuseppe Garibaldi's famous Expedition of the Thousand in 1859, one of the key military campaigns in the Italian unification movement. He also served in the Italian army during the Third Italian War of Independence against Austria in 1866.

After his military service, Moneta moved into journalism and became the editor of Il Secolo, a well-known Milan democratic newspaper published by Edoardo Sonzogno. He held this important position from 1867 to 1896, using it to promote democratic principles and social reform. Through his editorial work, he gained a reputation as a thoughtful commentator on political and social issues, gradually shifting his focus from nationalist military action to peaceful resolution of international conflicts.

Moneta's change from soldier to pacifist led him to establish the Lombard Association for Peace and Arbitration in 1890. This group promoted disarmament and proposed creating international institutions for conflict resolution, like a League of Nations and a Permanent Court of Arbitration. His peace advocacy gained him international recognition, and in 1907 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with French jurist Louis Renault. Moneta adopted the motto "In varietate unitas" (In variety, unity), which later influenced the European Union's motto. He died in Milan on February 10, 1918, having lived to see the start of World War I despite his lifelong efforts to promote international peace.

Before Fame

Moneta grew up during the chaotic time of Italian unification, known as the Risorgimento. Born when Italy was divided among different foreign and local rulers, he matured amidst a strong push for nationalism and revolution. The Austrian Empire's rule over northern Italy, including Milan where he was from, influenced his early activism and military involvement.

His journey from participating in the 1848 Milan uprising to advocating for peace later in life mirrored wider European changes in the nineteenth century. After witnessing the horrors of war during Italy’s unification efforts, Moneta joined a movement of thinkers and activists looking for non-military solutions. His shift from journalism to working for international peace lined up with the rise of organized peace groups in Europe and the start of international arbitration systems.
