Biography

Branislav Ivanović was born on February 22, 1984, in Sremska Mitrovica, back when it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Growing up during a turbulent political time, he became one of the most successful Serbian footballers of his era. Known for his versatility across the defense, he's best remembered for his ten years at Chelsea FC in the English Premier League, where he became a key and reliable defender.

Ivanović started his career with FK Srem in his hometown before moving to OFK Beograd in January 2004, where he developed into a top player. In 2006, he joined Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League, spending two seasons there and winning the 2007 Russian Cup. His strong performances caught the eye of English clubs, leading to Chelsea paying about £12 million for him in January 2008.

At Chelsea, Ivanović had an outstanding run over nine years. He played 377 matches and scored 34 goals, ranking second only to John Terry among Chelsea's scoring defenders and becoming one of just five foreign players to exceed 300 appearances for the club. He won nine major trophies, including three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, the 2012 UEFA Champions League, and the UEFA Europa League. Twice named in the PFA Team of the Year, he consistently performed at a high level in one of the toughest leagues. A highlight was in 2013 when he scored a late header to win the Europa League final against Benfica for Chelsea.

In February 2017, Ivanović returned to Russia, signing with Zenit Saint Petersburg on a free transfer. After several years there, he went back to English football in 2020 to join West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League. He made a limited number of appearances during a tough season and left after the 2020-21 season, announcing his retirement from professional football.

Internationally, Ivanović first played for Serbia and Montenegro in June 2005. After the union dissolved, he continued with the Serbian national team, becoming its most capped player with 105 appearances and 13 goals. He played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and became the team captain in 2012, leading up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he broke the previous caps record. His international career spanned over a decade, solidifying his importance in Serbian football history.

Before Fame

Ivanović grew up in Sremska Mitrovica, a city in the Vojvodina region of Serbia with a strong local football culture. He joined FK Srem, the club closest to his hometown, and developed as a footballer during the challenging 1990s and early 2000s. This was a time when Yugoslav and later Serbian football was rebuilding its infrastructure and international reputation after years of political conflict and sanctions.

His move to OFK Beograd in 2004 brought him into Serbia and Montenegro's top division, giving him the exposure he needed to get noticed more widely. The transfer to Lokomotiv Moscow in 2006 was an important step, putting him in a well-equipped European club setting and expanding his experience before Chelsea saw him as an athletic, technically skilled defender perfect for the Premier League.
