Biography

Cao Rui (204 or 205 – 22 January 239), courtesy name Yuanzhong, was the second emperor of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history. There's historical debate about who his parents were. His mother, Lady Zhen, was initially married to Yuan Xi, a son of the warlord Yuan Shao. After Cao Cao conquered the north, she married Cao Pi, who founded the Wei state. Because of different records about Cao Rui's age at death, scholar Pei Songzhi concluded that his recorded age of 36 was wrong if Cao Pi was indeed his father. Later scholars Lu Bi and Mao Guangsheng suggested that Cao Rui might have actually been the biological son of Yuan Xi and not Cao Pi, a question that still hasn't been settled.

Before Fame

Cao Rui grew up in Cao Pi's household when the Cao family was solidifying their hold on northern China. His mother, Lady Zhen, known for her beauty and writing skills, was executed by Cao Pi around 221, supposedly after losing imperial favor. This situation made Cao Rui's early years in the Wei court politically unstable. Despite this, he was seen as a smart and capable young man and became crown prince before his father died.

Key Achievements

  • Successfully defended Wei's northern territories against multiple northern expeditions launched by Shu Han's Zhuge Liang
  • Maintained the stability and territorial integrity of the Cao Wei state throughout his 13-year reign
  • Presided over significant construction of imperial palaces and ancestral temples that defined the architectural ambition of the Wei court
  • Established a regency council before his death to manage the succession of his adopted heir Cao Fang
  • Posthumously honored with the temple name Liezu and the imperial title Emperor Ming
