Biography

Carlos María Ramírez (1848–1898) was a Uruguayan journalist, essayist, and politician who occupied a prominent place in the intellectual and civic life of Uruguay during the second half of the nineteenth century. Born in Brazil in 1848, he was the son of Juan Pedro Ramírez Carrasco and Consolación Álvarez y Obes, and was one of several brothers who distinguished themselves in Uruguayan public life, including José Pedro, Julio, Juan Augusto, Octavio, and Gonzalo Ramírez. He died in Montevideo in 1898, having spent the bulk of his adult life engaged in the intersecting worlds of journalism, letters, and government.
