Biography

Oscar Jack Piastri, born on April 6, 2001, is an Australian racing driver competing in Formula One for McLaren. Growing up in Melbourne, he has become one of Formula One's top drivers, winning nine Grands Prix from 2023 to 2026. His quick rise through motorsport's junior ranks and success in Formula One have made him a major Australian sports figure.

Piastri began his racing journey with radio-controlled cars before moving to karting at age 10, winning several regional titles. In 2016, he advanced to junior racing series and showed his skill by winning the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup with R-ace GP. He continued his streak with back-to-back wins in the 2020 FIA Formula 3 and 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championships while racing for Prema. This made him the sixth person to win the GP2/Formula 2 title as a rookie and the only one to win Formula Renault, Formula Three, and Formula Two championships in consecutive years.

Piastri was part of the Alpine Academy from 2020 to 2022, and his path to Formula One included a notable contract dispute with Alpine before he joined McLaren in 2023. Teaming up with Lando Norris, he debuted in Formula One at the Bahrain Grand Prix and earned his first podium at the Japanese Grand Prix during his rookie year, establishing himself as a strong contender in the sport's top tier.

His breakthrough came in 2024 with a win in Hungary, followed by another in Azerbaijan, making him the fifth Australian to win a Formula One Grand Prix. The 2025 season was even better, with seven more wins and his first pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix. He finished third that season in a close championship fight with teammate Norris and reigning champion Max Verstappen.

By the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, Piastri had achieved nine race wins, six pole positions, nine fastest laps, and 27 podiums. His consistent performances and race wins have secured his spot at McLaren through the end of the 2028 season, making him a key player in Formula One for the coming years.

Before Fame

Piastri got his start in motorsport with radio-controlled racing, which was an unusual way to learn about vehicle handling and racing lines before he was even old enough to drive legally. When he began karting at age 10, he started his formal racing education, taking part in regional championships in Australia. His natural talent shone through with several title wins.

In 2016, he made a significant move by entering the European junior formulas, following the well-trodden path for those aiming for Formula One. His journey through Formula Renault, Formula 3, and Formula 2 was both careful and rapid, with each championship win pushing him closer to his ultimate goal of Formula One. Winning championships consecutively in these categories was a first in motorsport history.
