Biography

Cheikhou Kouyaté was born on December 21, 1989, in Dakar, Senegal. He honed his football skills in Senegal before getting a chance to move to Europe at sixteen when Belgian club RWDM Brussels offered him a youth contract in 2006. After making ten appearances for RWDM, Anderlecht noticed him and he joined them at nineteen. His time at Anderlecht was key, as he made 206 appearances and won the Belgian First Division A title four times, becoming one of Belgian football's most reliable midfielders.

In June 2014, Kouyaté moved to England, signing with West Ham United in the Premier League. His physicality, strong defense, and ability to play in different positions made him a valuable team member. He spent four seasons with West Ham before moving to Crystal Palace in 2018 for around £9.5 million. At Palace, he continued to show his versatility by playing both as a defensive midfielder and a center-back over four seasons. He left Palace in 2022, joining Nottingham Forest following their return to the Premier League.

Kouyaté's international career spanned over a decade with the Senegal national team. He debuted in 2012 at age 22 and also played in the 2012 Olympic Games that same year. He participated in two FIFA World Cups, playing in the 2018 tournament in Russia and the 2022 event in Qatar. He took part in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, with the highlight being Senegal's title win at the 2021 edition, a major achievement for Senegalese football. In all, Kouyaté earned over 90 international caps before wrapping up his national team career in 2024.

Throughout his career, Kouyaté was known for being able to handle various roles in a team's defense and midfield setup. His sustained performance at the top levels of European club football, along with his enduring role in the Senegal national team, showed a consistency and professionalism that kept him competitive well into his thirties.
