Biography

Chiwetel Umeadi Ejiofor was born on July 10, 1977, in Forest Gate, London, to Nigerian parents. He went to Dulwich Prep for his early education and then attended Dulwich College before furthering his acting skills at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He started his career by joining the National Youth Theatre in 1995, which helped him grow as an actor.

Ejiofor's big break came at the age of 19 when Steven Spielberg cast him as James Covey in Amistad (1997), just three months into his drama school studies. Being recognized by such a well-known director early on helped boost his career. He went on to work in a variety of films, from romantic comedies like Love Actually (2003) to sci-fi movies such as Children of Men (2006) and Serenity (2005). His roles in independent films like Dirty Pretty Things (2002) showcased his talent and dedication to strong character roles.

He received critical praise for playing Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave (2013), earning a BAFTA Award for Best Actor and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. This role marked a high point in his acting career and solidified his status as one of the UK's top actors. In theatre, he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his role in Othello (2008).

Ejiofor also ventured into directing and screenwriting with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019), where he wrote, directed, and acted, and later with Rob Peace (2024). Additionally, he's a notable voice actor, providing the voice for Scar in Disney's remake of The Lion King (2019). On TV, he's known for performances in Dancing on the Edge (2014), earning an Emmy nomination, and The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022). In the Marvel movies, he plays Karl Mordo in the Doctor Strange series.

In recognition of his achievements in the arts, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008 and was promoted to Commander (CBE) in 2015. His career spans across film, TV, theatre, and voice acting, establishing him as one of the most talented actors of his generation.

Before Fame

Ejiofor grew up in a Nigerian immigrant family in London, where his parents settled after moving from Nigeria. His father was a doctor, and his mother worked in pharmacy, providing a stable middle-class environment that focused on education. He attended Dulwich College, known for producing many notable actors and public figures.

His journey into acting began with the National Youth Theatre, a well-regarded training ground for young British performers. His formal education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, combined with practical experience in youth theatre, gave him classical training that has been valuable throughout his career. Being cast in Amistad while still a student was an extraordinary early opportunity that most actors don’t get.
