Biography
Rajnath Singh, born on July 10, 1951, in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, is a well-known Indian politician and lecturer who has held several important positions in the Indian government. He is currently India's 29th Minister of Defence, starting in 2019, and has been the Deputy Leader of the House in Lok Sabha since 2014. Singh was also the Union Minister of Home Affairs from 2014 to 2019 in the first Modi ministry. Notably, he's the first person born after Indian independence to hold this office. He studied at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University and is married to Savitri Singh.
Singh's political journey started with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a swayamsevak, which paved the way for his involvement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He quickly moved up the party ranks, becoming President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 1988 to 1990, showing his early leadership skills within the organization. He went on to be BJP President twice, from 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2014, during key times for the party.
Throughout his career, Singh has held important ministerial roles at both state and national levels. He was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2000 to 2002, guiding India's most populous state during a tough period. Nationally, he was the Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Vajpayee Government from 1999 to 2000, and then the Minister of Agriculture from 2003 to 2004. These roles gave him broad administrative experience across various sectors.
Singh's parliamentary career is also notable, with service in both houses of the Indian Parliament. He was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2008. In Lok Sabha, he represented the Ghaziabad constituency from 2009 to 2014, then moved to represent Lucknow since 2014. He also served twice in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Haidergarh constituency. As Defence Minister since 2019, he leads India's defense sector during a time of changing security challenges and military advancements.
Before Fame
Rajnath Singh grew up in the Chandauli district where he got an early understanding of the social and political issues of rural Uttar Pradesh after independence. He studied at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University and this education supported his dual roles as both a lecturer and politician. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh influenced him during his youth, shaping his beliefs and providing organizational training that would be valuable in his political career.
His rise in politics began with grassroots work through the RSS and later the BJP's youth wing. In the 1980s and 1990s, a time when Indian politics was changing with more regional parties and coalition governments, Singh’s organizational skills and commitment to the party stood out. In 1988, he became the President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, marking him as an important figure within the BJP, and setting up his progress to leadership roles at the state and national level.
