Biography
Cristhian Ricardo Stuani Curbelo was born on 12 October 1986 in Tala, Uruguay. A professional footballer who plays as a striker, Stuani has had a long career in South America and Europe, becoming one of the most consistent goal-scorers from Uruguay in his generation. He has both Uruguayan and Italian citizenship, which has sometimes affected his club eligibility in European competitions.
Stuani started his professional career at Danubio, one of Uruguay's well-known clubs, before moving to Europe when Italian club Reggina bought him in 2008. After playing in Italy, he moved to Spain, where he spent most of his career. He played for several Spanish clubs and became known as a reliable and strong centre-forward in La Liga. His time at Espanyol was particularly noteworthy, as it helped solidify his reputation in the league.
In 2015, Stuani joined English football by signing with Middlesbrough. The club was aiming for promotion to the Premier League, and Stuani contributed during this effort before returning to Spain in 2017 to join Girona. This move would become the highlight of his club career. At Girona, Stuani became the main striker and eventually the team captain. He scored frequently in La Liga during Girona's time in the top flight, making a name for himself as one of the division's top strikers and gaining recognition that belied the club's modest profile.
On the international stage, Stuani debuted for Uruguay in 2012. He went on to play for the national team in two FIFA World Cups, in 2014 in Brazil and in 2018 in Russia. He also participated in three Copa América tournaments. With over 25 goals for the Uruguayan national team, he ranks among the country's more productive international strikers, playing a supportive but significant role alongside more well-known Uruguayan attackers of his time. His performance in major tournaments enhanced his reputation as a reliable choice for the national team.
As of now, Stuani is still with Girona, now playing in the Segunda División, where he holds a captaincy role. His career covers nearly two decades of professional football across four countries, and he remains active in the sport well into his late thirties.
Before Fame
Cristhian Stuani grew up in Tala, a small city in the Canelones department of Uruguay. Football is a big part of Uruguayan culture, and young players from across the country have often looked to local clubs as a way into professional football. Stuani developed in this setting and got his start at Danubio, a Montevideo club known for producing professional players.
His move to Reggina in Italy in 2008 started his European career, following a path many South American players of his time took, as Italian clubs actively scouted in Uruguay and Argentina. By the time Stuani made the move, transitioning from Uruguayan football to mid-tier European leagues was common, and his shift into Spanish football was similar to the journeys of several players from his generation.
