Dalia Grybauskaitė (born March 1, 1956) is a Lithuanian politician, diplomat, and economist who served as the President of Lithuania from 2009 to 2019. Born in Vilnius during the Soviet era, she was the first woman to hold the country's highest office and was reelected for a second term in 2014. She attended the Economics Faculty of Saint Petersburg State University during the Soviet era and furthered her studies at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service in the U.S. This education gave her the economic and diplomatic skills that shaped her career in European and Lithuanian politics.

Before becoming president, Grybauskaitė held important positions in both the Lithuanian government and European Union. Before Fame

Growing up in Soviet-era Vilnius, Grybauskaitė experienced a time of major political and social change in Eastern Europe. She studied economics at Saint Petersburg State University, which connected her with the intellectual trends that helped drive democratization movements across the Soviet bloc. In the 1980s and 1990s, young intellectuals and economists played key roles in helping former Soviet republics shift toward market economies and democratic governance.

Her rise to prominence began during Lithuania's independence period, when the newly sovereign nation needed skilled economists and diplomats to manage both European integration and the post-Soviet economic transition. Her international education and financial expertise were especially important during Lithuania's EU accession process and its integration into Western institutions.
