Biography

Gitanas Nausėda is a Lithuanian economist, banker, and politician who has been the President of Lithuania since 2019. He was born on May 19, 1964, in Klaipėda, a port city on the Baltic Sea. He studied economics at Vilnius University, graduating in 1987, and furthered his education at the University of Mannheim in Germany during a time of political change in Eastern Europe.

Nausėda began his career in Lithuania's financial sector as the country moved to a market economy after gaining independence from the Soviet Union. From 1996 to 2000, he was the director of monetary policy at the Bank of Lithuania, helping to shape the modern banking system. He then moved to the private sector, working as the chief economist for SEB bankas, one of Lithuania's largest banks, from 2008 to 2018. During this time, he became a well-known economic commentator, often appearing in the media.

In 2019, Nausėda shifted from banking to politics, running for president as an independent candidate. His campaign focused on moderate and pragmatic policies, appealing to a wide range of voters. He won the 2019 presidential election, defeating Ingrida Šimonytė in the second round with 66% of the vote. His victory was credited to his centrist stance and strong economic background.

As president, Nausėda has dealt with major international issues, such as Lithuania's response to the 2020-2021 Belarusian protests and its stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His time in office has seen conflicts with Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė's cabinet, leading to political disputes and talks of impeachment. Despite these challenges, he was re-elected in 2024 for a second five-year term on May 26. During his presidency, he has received several international honors, including awards from Ukraine, Belgium, and Denmark in 2026. He is married to Diana Nausėdienė.

Before Fame

Nausėda grew up in Klaipėda during the last years of Soviet rule in Lithuania when there weren't many job opportunities, and higher education was one of the few ways to advance professionally. He chose to study economics at Vilnius University in the 1980s, which set him up well for the big economic changes that came after Lithuania gained independence in 1990.

With the Soviet economic system gone, there was a huge need for people familiar with market economics and Western financial systems. Nausėda's additional studies at the University of Mannheim gave him important knowledge of European banking practices, making him a great fit for high-level jobs in Lithuania's financial sector as it was being privatized and modernized in the 1990s.
