Biography

Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner known for his remarkable achievements in the Olympics during the 1960s. Born on August 7, 1932, in Shewa, Ethiopia, he became the first Ethiopian to win an Olympic gold medal and was the first to defend an Olympic marathon title. His world record victories at the 1960 Rome Olympics and 1964 Tokyo Olympics made him one of the greatest marathon runners ever.

Around 1952, Abebe moved to Addis Ababa and joined the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Ethiopian Imperial Guard, an elite unit that protected the emperor. He served honorably in the Kagnew Battalion during the Korean War and eventually reached the rank of shambel (captain). His time in the military gave him the discipline that later boosted his athletic career.

Abebe's marathon journey began while he was in the military. He ran in sixteen marathons throughout his career, coming in second in his first race in Addis Ababa. He won twelve other races, although he faced setbacks like finishing fifth at the 1963 Boston Marathon. His career ended in July 1967 when he suffered the first of several leg injuries that stopped him from completing his last two marathons.

Tragedy hit on March 22, 1969, when Abebe was paralyzed in a car accident. Despite losing the use of his legs, he showed the same determination as in his running career by taking up new sports. While receiving treatment in England, he competed in archery and table tennis at the 1970 Stoke Mandeville Games in London, an early version of the Paralympic Games. He continued participating in competitions for disabled athletes, including a 1971 event in Norway where he won the cross-country sleigh-riding. Abebe passed away on October 25, 1973, at age 41 from a cerebral hemorrhage linked to complications from his accident years earlier.

Before Fame

Born in the rural province of Shewa, Abebe Bikila grew up when Ethiopia was one of the few African nations not colonized by European powers. His early life coincided with the Italian occupation of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941, a key period in the country's modern history.

His journey to athletic success began when he moved to Addis Ababa around 1952 and joined the Ethiopian Imperial Guard. The military provided structure and physical training, which was crucial to his later achievements. He was selected for the Olympic team through his service, as Ethiopian athletic programs were closely linked to military institutions at the time.
