Biography

Desiré Delano Bouterse, born on 13 October 1945 in Domburg, Suriname, became one of the most controversial political and military figures in the country's history. He attended the Royal Military School and climbed the ranks of the Surinamese army to become a sergeant major. On 25 February 1980, he led a successful military coup against the elected government of Henck Arron, overthrowing civilian rule and taking control of Suriname through the National Military Council. His rule in the 1980s was marked by severe repression of political opposition, highlighted by the December murders in 1982, where fifteen of his regime's critics, including journalists, lawyers, and military officers, were killed at Fort Zeelandia in Paramaribo. These killings were widely condemned internationally and resulted in the suspension of Dutch development aid to Suriname.

Before Fame

Bouterse grew up in Suriname during the last years of Dutch colonial rule before the country gained independence in 1975. He chose a military career and trained at the Royal Military School. After independence, the Surinamese military was small and lacked proper funding. Ambitious officers like Bouterse gained influence among the ranks, especially as soldiers were unhappy with their pay and working conditions. Bouterse used this dissatisfaction to stage the 1980 coup, quickly moving from being relatively unknown to becoming a central figure in national power.
