Biography

Diego de Ordaz (1480-1532) was a Spanish explorer and soldier involved in key expeditions during the early Spanish takeover of the Americas. Born in Zamora, Spain, Ordaz became a well-known figure in the conquest of the Aztec Empire and the exploration of South America. He joined Hernán Cortés in the conquest of Mexico, where he stood out as both a military officer and a brave explorer ready to take on risky missions.

Ordaz is especially remembered for trying to climb Popocatépetl, an active volcano near what is now Mexico City, during the Mexican campaign. This climb, which happened around 1519, showed his daring nature and earned him recognition from the Spanish crown. He was curious about the volcano's sulfur deposits, useful for making gunpowder, and wanted to show Spanish courage to the local people.

After Mexico was conquered, Ordaz was given several rewards and important roles in New Spain. But his ambitions went beyond Mexico, and he got permission from the Spanish crown to explore and settle areas along the South American coast. In the late 1520s, he led an expedition to explore the Orinoco River region in present-day Venezuela, in search of the legendary wealth believed to be hidden in the continent's interior.

His South American expedition faced many challenges and didn't achieve its main goals. The team encountered hostile indigenous groups, disease, tough terrain, and supply shortages. Despite these issues, Ordaz pushed on with his explorations along South America's northern coast. He died in 1532 on the Paria Peninsula, in what is now Venezuela, during these ongoing explorations. His death ended a career that covered some of the most important early Spanish explorations in the New World, from conquering Mexico to early attempts at exploring the South American interior.

Before Fame

Diego de Ordaz was born in Zamora in 1480, during the last part of the Reconquista when Spain was forming its identity as a unified Christian kingdom. Not much is known about his early life, but he probably came from a family with modest means, as many young men of his time looked for opportunities in the military or through ventures abroad. The discovery of the Americas in 1492 opened up new chances for ambitious Spaniards to gain wealth, land, and social status through exploration and conquest.

Ordaz's rise began when he joined the increasing number of Spanish adventurers going to the Caribbean in the early 1500s. He likely took part in several military campaigns in the Caribbean islands before joining Hernán Cortés's expedition to Mexico in 1519. His military skills and readiness to take on dangerous missions quickly caught the eye of Cortés, who valued dependable and brave officers for the conquest of the Aztec Empire.
