Biography
Diego Forlán was born on May 19, 1979, in Montevideo, Uruguay. As a forward widely seen as one of the best strikers of his time, Forlán had a career that took him across multiple continents over almost two decades in professional football. He was especially known for his skill, long-range shots, and smart movements, which led to him earning individual awards not often achieved by many players in the sport's history.
Forlán started his career in Uruguay, playing in the youth teams of Peñarol and Danubio before moving to the Argentine club Independiente in 1997. As he developed through their youth ranks and proved his scoring abilities, he caught the eye of English powerhouse Manchester United and joined them in 2002. During his time in England, he won the Premier League title in 2002–03 and the FA Cup in 2003–04, although his performance was sometimes uneven by his own high standards. A switch to Villarreal in Spain in 2004 marked a turning point, as he quickly became one of the top scorers in Europe, winning both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe in his first season with 25 goals.
Forlán's club career peaked with Atlético Madrid, which he joined in 2007. In the 2008–09 La Liga season, he scored 32 goals and again took home the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Shoe, becoming the first player since Ronaldo to win the Pichichi twice. In European competition, he was crucial, scoring the winning goal in the 2010 UEFA Europa League final and helping the team win the UEFA Super Cup that same year. Internationally, Forlán shone at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, scoring five goals and being awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player, enhancing his global recognition. He ended his international career with 36 goals in 112 matches for Uruguay.
After leaving Atlético Madrid, Forlán played for Inter Milan, Internacional in Brazil, Cerezo Osaka in Japan, his first club Peñarol, Mumbai City in India, and Kitchee in Hong Kong before retiring. He transitioned to coaching, leading Club Atlético Atenas in Uruguay's Segunda División. In a surprising twist to his sports career, Forlán pursued professional tennis and made his ATP debut at the 2024 Uruguay Open, having been a dedicated tennis player during his football career.
Before Fame
Diego Forlán was born into a football-loving family in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1979. His father, Pablo Forlán, played for Uruguay internationally, and his maternal grandfather, Juan Carlos Corazzo, coached the Uruguayan national team, so football was a big part of his upbringing. He started out as a youth player at Peñarol, one of Uruguay's well-known clubs, before moving to Danubio.
In 1997, his transfer to Independiente in Argentina was a key step in his professional career. South American club football in the late 1990s was very competitive for young talent, and Forlán's performances at Independiente caught the attention of European clubs looking for new players. During his successful four years there, he proved himself as a skilled and smart forward, which led to his transfer to Manchester United in 2002, marking the start of his international fame.
