Biography

Édouard Osoque Mendy was born on March 1, 1992, in Montivilliers, Normandy, France. Although he grew up in France, he is of Senegalese and Guinea-Bissau descent, which later influenced his international football career. He started learning football at the Le Havre academy, one of the well-known youth programs in France, and signed his first professional contract with Cherbourg, a third-division club, in 2011. His early career was challenging, and after being released by Cherbourg in 2014, Mendy nearly quit football. He got a new opportunity with Olympique de Marseille’s reserve team, which changed his career path.

After his time with Marseille's reserves, Mendy worked his way up through French football. He became a dependable and impressive goalkeeper during his time with Stade de Reims and Stade Rennais, known for his strong presence, quick reactions, and good management of the penalty area. His performance at Rennes drew attention from top European clubs.

In summer 2020, Chelsea FC signed Mendy for around £22 million, bringing him to the Premier League. He quickly made a mark at Stamford Bridge, becoming the first African goalkeeper for Chelsea's senior team. In his first season, he had sixteen clean sheets in the Premier League and matched the record for most clean sheets in a single UEFA Champions League season, with nine. He kept a clean sheet in the Champions League final, where Chelsea beat Manchester City 1–0, winning the club's second European title. That year, he also won both the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and The Best FIFA Goalkeeper awards for 2021, being the first African goalkeeper to earn both.

Mendy stayed Chelsea's top goalkeeper through the 2021–22 season but started to lose his spot in the starting lineup during the 2022–23 season. In 2023, he left England when Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli signed him for about £16 million. At Al-Ahli, Mendy took on a leadership role, continuing his career in the competitive Saudi league.

Internationally, Mendy's journey was unique. He was eligible to play for Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, or France and initially chose Guinea-Bissau in tribute to his father, then switched to Senegal. He became Senegal's main goalkeeper at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team was runner-up. He played a key part in Senegal's win at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, keeping a clean sheet in the final and being named the tournament's best goalkeeper. He helped Senegal reach the final again at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing as runner-up once more.

Before Fame

Mendy grew up in Montivilliers, a small town in northern France near Le Havre, where he first learned to play football before joining the Le Havre academy. Making his way to professional football wasn't easy or guaranteed. After signing with Cherbourg in the French third division in 2011, he spent several years away from top-level football. When the club let him go in 2014, he faced a real crisis of confidence and nearly quit the sport.

He began to recover quietly with Marseille's reserve team, where he got a chance to rebuild without much attention. Through steady performances in these less visible settings, Mendy developed the technical skills and mental strength that later set him apart at the highest level. His progress with Reims and Rennes showed how players who develop later can become top talents well into their mid-to-late twenties if given enough chances.
