Biography

Eduard Heger, born on May 3, 1976, in Bratislava, Slovakia, went to the University of Economics in Bratislava. There, he studied economic theory and practice, which later influenced his views on public finance and governance. Before getting into politics, Heger worked in the private sector, gaining experience that set him apart from career politicians and gave him a market-focused perspective.

Heger became well-known nationally through his work with the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities party, or OĽaNO. He was on the party's presidium and became one of its well-known members. Known for his skills in fiscal matters, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in Prime Minister Igor Matovič's cabinet, where he handled Slovakia's public finances during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic.

After a government shakeup in which Matovič and Heger switched roles, Eduard Heger became Prime Minister of Slovakia on April 1, 2021, leading a center-right coalition government. His time as Prime Minister lasted until May 15, 2023, and was marked by various challenges, including economic recovery from the pandemic, Slovakia's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and internal political instability. Under his leadership, Slovakia adopted a pro-Western and pro-Ukrainian foreign policy, providing military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv.

In 2021, Heger was awarded the Order of Merit, 1st class, for his contributions to public service. However, his government lost a vote of no confidence in December 2022, and he stayed on in a caretaker role until a new government was formed in May 2023. This political upheaval happened amid broader tensions within Slovakia's divided political scene.

In March 2023, Heger left OĽaNO and took over leadership of the Blue Coalition party, which was later renamed as Democrats. Through this new party, he aimed to present a liberal-conservative option in Slovak politics, though the party faced the challenge of gaining ground outside the parliament. Heger continued to be an active figure in Slovak public life, supporting European integration, rule of law, and ongoing support for Ukraine.

Before Fame

Eduard Heger grew up in Bratislava during the last years of communist Czechoslovakia and came of age in the new Slovak Republic after Czechoslovakia peacefully split in 1993. This was a time of fast economic changes, privatization, and the creation of democratic institutions, shaping the political and economic views of his generation. He studied at the University of Economics in Bratislava, earning his qualifications when market economics was replacing the previous centrally planned systems.

Before getting into politics, Heger worked in the private sector, which was somewhat rare for Slovak politicians at the time. He later mentioned this experience as shaping his economic policy approach. He got into politics through civic involvement and party engagement rather than traditional political routes, joining a wave of new political figures in the late 2010s looking to challenge established parties.
