Biography
Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, into a wealthy family. He went to Waterkloof House Preparatory School, Pretoria Boys High School, and Bryanston High School before moving to Canada in 1989, where he had citizenship through his Canadian-born mother. Musk continued his studies at Queen's University before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania. There, he earned bachelor's degrees from both The Wharton School and the School of Engineering and Applied Science in 1997. He briefly attended Stanford University for graduate studies but left after two days to start his own businesses.
Musk's business journey began in 1995 when he co-founded Zip2, a software company providing business directories and maps for newspapers. Compaq bought the company in 1999 for nearly $300 million. That same year, Musk co-founded X.com, an online payment company that merged with Confinity to become PayPal. eBay bought PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion, and Musk received $165 million from the sale. He became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
In 2002, Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) to make space travel more affordable and enable Mars colonization. As CEO and chief engineer, he led the creation of the Falcon rocket series and Dragon spacecraft, making SpaceX the first private company to send astronauts to the International Space Station. In 2004, Musk joined Tesla Motors as an early investor and chairman, becoming CEO and product architect in 2008. Under his leadership, Tesla became a top manufacturer of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Musk's other projects include Neuralink, which he co-founded in 2016 to develop brain-computer interfaces, and The Boring Company, started in 2017 to build underground transportation tunnels. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 to promote artificial intelligence research but left due to disagreements over the organization's direction. In 2022, Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, making significant changes and rebranding the platform as X in 2023. He then founded xAI because of his concerns about AI development, and it became a SpaceX subsidiary in 2026. As of 2026, Forbes says his net worth is $809 billion, making him the world's richest person.
Before Fame
Growing up in apartheid-era South Africa, Musk showed early interests in computing and entrepreneurship. He taught himself computer programming at age 12 and sold his first software, a game called Blastar, to a computer magazine for $500. Despite dealing with bullying at school and a tough relationship with his father, Musk did well academically and became interested in physics and engineering.
Seeing limited opportunities in South Africa and wanting to avoid mandatory military service, Musk moved to Canada at age 17. He worked different jobs, including at a lumber mill and farm, before enrolling at Queen's University. His move to North America happened during the early rise of the internet and personal computing, positioning him to take advantage of new technological opportunities in Silicon Valley during the dot-com boom of the 1990s.
