Biography

Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was born in Riyadh in 1920, though some sources say it might have been 1921 or 1923. He was the eighth son of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, and the eldest of the Sudairi Seven, the sons from King Abdulaziz's wife Hassa bint Ahmed Al Sudairi. Fahd got his early education at the Princes' School in Riyadh, which was set up just for the royal family. He married Al Jawhara bint Ibrahim Al Ibrahim and AlAnoud and became a key ruler in Saudi Arabian history.

Fahd's career in administration started when he was appointed Minister of Education in 1953, during King Saud's reign. He held this role until 1962, focusing on expanding and modernizing Saudi Arabia's educational system. He then served as Interior Minister from 1962 to 1975, covering the last years of King Saud's reign and all of King Faisal's. After King Faisal was assassinated in 1975, Fahd's half-brother Khalid became king and named Fahd as Crown Prince. Due to King Khalid's ongoing health issues, Fahd often acted as the country's leader, handling daily governance and representing Saudi Arabia internationally.

When King Khalid died on 13 June 1982, Fahd became king and also took on the role of Prime Minister. His reign lasted 23 years until his death in 2005, the longest in Saudi history. One major achievement during his rule was the introduction of the Basic Law of Saudi Arabia in 1992, a key document that outlined governance, rights, and duties in the kingdom based on Islamic principles and affirming the Quran and Sunnah as the country's constitution.

In 1995, Fahd had a severe stroke that left him largely incapacitated. After this, his half-brother and Crown Prince Abdullah increasingly took over daily governing responsibilities. Despite this, Fahd stayed king until he passed away. He died on 1 August 2005 at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. Crown Prince Abdullah became king afterward. Fahd's contributions to the kingdom are remembered through the King Fahd History Exhibition, known as Spirit of Leadership.

Before Fame

Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud grew up in Saudi Arabia's royal court, a country his father, King Abdulaziz, had united from various tribal territories in the early 20th century. As one of King Abdulaziz's many sons, Fahd was educated at the Princes' School in Riyadh, set up to prepare royal family members for roles in governance. During his early years, Saudi Arabia was still strengthening its institutions, developing its oil industry after major discoveries in the late 1930s, and starting to make its presence known globally.

Fahd's rise to prominence followed the Al Saud family tradition, where senior princes were given government roles to gain experience and prove their capabilities. His appointment as Minister of Education in 1953 gave him a major national platform and allowed him to influence the development of a modernizing state. His long tenure as Interior Minister further solidified his status as one of the kingdom's most powerful and experienced officials, placing him in a strong position when Khalid named him Crown Prince in 1975.
