Biography

Gaspar Becerra (1520–1568) was a Spanish painter and sculptor linked to the School of Valladolid. Born in Baeza, Andalusia, Spain, he became one of the most important Spanish artists of the sixteenth century, a time of active artistic exchange between Spain and Italy. He blended Italian Mannerism with Spanish artistic traditions, significantly impacting religious art in the Iberian Peninsula.

This time in Italy influenced his artistic style, especially in how he dealt with sculptural form and combined painting and architecture in large religious works, which he later brought back to Spain.
