Biography

Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada y Rivera, born in Granada, Spain, in 1509, played a significant role in the Spanish conquest of South America. He studied law at the University of Salamanca, bringing a rare intellectual discipline to his military and administrative tasks among conquistadors. His legal training influenced his style of governance, making him one of the few conquistadors who wrote in detail about the regions he explored and the people he met.

Before Fame

Jiménez de Quesada grew up in Granada during a time of strong Spanish expansion, both in Iberia and across the Atlantic. He studied law at the University of Salamanca, one of Europe's top universities, which set him apart from many others in the New World. After finishing his studies, he worked in legal services in Spain before being selected to join the colonial efforts in the Americas, arriving in Santa Marta on Colombia's northern coast around 1535.

Key Achievements

  • Founded Santafé de Bogotá on August 6, 1538, which became the capital of the New Kingdom of Granada and is today the capital of Colombia.
  • Conquered the Muisca Confederation, one of the most politically sophisticated indigenous polities in South America at the time of contact.
  • Named and organized the New Kingdom of Granada and drafted its first legislative framework for colonial governance.
  • Served as governor of Cartagena from 1556 to 1557 and held the title of Marshal of New Granada.
  • Authored historical chronicles of the conquest, making him one of the earliest historians of what is now Colombia.
