Biography
Hans Holten (1892–1973) was a Norwegian newspaper editor, agronomist, and politician who worked in agriculture, journalism, and politics for much of the twentieth century. Born in Surnadal Municipality in 1892, he grew up in a western Norwegian region where farming was a key part of the community's life. Although he studied to become an agronomist, his career took him away from farming to work in journalism and politics, where he contributed to Norwegian public discussion during a challenging time.
Before Fame
Holten grew up when Norway's farming communities were becoming more politically organized and vocal. In the early 1900s, agrarian political movements were on the rise in Scandinavia. Holten, trained as an agronomist, was part of the rural professionals increasingly involved in public matters. Moving from agriculture to journalism was common then, as many educated rural men found they could support their communities through the press and political groups, not just through farming. His mix of agricultural expertise and communication skills made him valuable to the Agrarian Party as it worked to expand its political influence in Norway during the 1920s and 1930s.
