Biography
Hayden Christensen (born April 19, 1981) is a Canadian actor known worldwide for playing Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Christensen started acting as a teen on Canadian TV before moving to American shows and eventually big Hollywood films. He gained fame with his role as the young Darth Vader in George Lucas's Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), roles that defined his career and made him widely recognized.
Christensen began acting at 13 on Canadian TV, appearing in various series and TV movies. Moving to American TV in the late 1990s, he took on roles that highlighted his dramatic skills, including his early film appearance in Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides (1999). His performance in Life as a House (2001) alongside Kevin Kline earned critical praise and showed his ability to handle complex emotional roles. He then played journalist Stephen Glass in Shattered Glass (2003), a role that further established his reputation as a dramatic actor and earned him critical acclaim.
After his Star Wars success, Christensen worked in both independent and mainstream films. He appeared in the thriller Awake (2007), the sci-fi action film Jumper (2008) directed by Doug Liman, and the heist film Takers (2010). While some of these projects got mixed reviews, they gave him a chance to try different genres and work with well-known directors and actors. His filmography also includes romantic comedies like Little Italy (2018), showing his range in different types of films.
Recently, Christensen has returned to the Star Wars universe through Disney+ series. He played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader again in Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), reuniting with Ewan McGregor, and appeared in Ahsoka (2023). Fans have welcomed these appearances, allowing him to revisit the character with two decades more of acting experience. He studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, where he learned classical acting techniques that have supported him throughout his career.
Before Fame
Christensen, originally from Vancouver, grew up in Ontario. He attended several schools, including Baythorn Public School, Thornhill Secondary School, and Unionville High School, before deciding to study acting formally. He began his acting career as a teenager, appearing on Canadian TV, which eventually led him from Canadian shows to a major film franchise in cinema history.
The late '90s and early 2000s were a time of change in Hollywood, with digital filmmaking starting to change the industry and new platforms for up-and-coming talent. Christensen moved from Canadian TV to American productions, a common path for Canadian actors. His casting in Star Wars came during Lucas's decision to make the prequel trilogy with lots of digital effects and new actors alongside well-known stars.
