Biography

Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani (born 19 April 1957) is an Indian businessman who is the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, India's biggest public company by market value. Born in Aden to Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries, and Kokilaben, he is the second generation to lead one of India's most influential business families. As of December 2025, he is Asia's richest person and the 16th wealthiest globally, with a net worth of US$112.8 billion.

Ambani's education includes several well-known institutions. He finished school at Hill Grange High School, then studied at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and the Institute of Chemical Technology. He went to Stanford University's Graduate School of Business but chose to leave in 1980 to join the family business. This decision was a turning point for both his career and the future of Reliance Industries.

Under Ambani's leadership, Reliance Industries saw major growth and changes. He led the construction of the world's largest petroleum refinery complex in Jamnagar, putting India on the map for global oil refining. He moved the company into telecommunications with Jio, which changed India's digital world by providing affordable 4G services to millions. He also expanded into retail, setting up supply chains and modern retail outlets across the country.

After his father's death in 2002, Mukesh and his younger brother Anil Ambani split the family business. Mukesh kept the oil, petrochemicals, and gas sections and continued to explore new areas in technology, healthcare, media, and sports. His business approach focuses on vertical integration and technological innovation, keeping Reliance Industries at the leading edge of India's industrial progress. Despite his business achievements, Ambani has faced criticism over allegations of market manipulation, political ties, and discussions about wealth inequality in India.

Before Fame

Mukesh Ambani's early life was influenced by his father Dhirubhai Ambani's entrepreneurial vision and their family's modest start in Gujarat before moving to Aden, where Mukesh was born. Growing up in a business-minded household, he saw the challenges and opportunities of building an industrial empire in post-independence India. His formative years coincided with India's shift from a socialist economy toward market liberalization, shaping his future business strategies.

His rise began during his college years when he actively joined family business discussions and planning. He decided to leave Stanford University in 1980, despite being enrolled in one of the world's top business programs, showing his commitment to expanding Reliance Industries. He quickly took on projects to enhance the company's manufacturing capabilities, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and gain competitive advantages in the Indian market.
