Biography

Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego was born on April 19, 1960, in Ciénaga de Oro, Colombia. He became politically aware during his teenage years and joined the 19th of April Movement (M-19) guerrilla group at age 17. This involvement shaped his early adulthood and political path. After 17 years with the group, he saw it change from an armed movement to the M-19 Democratic Alliance political party after Colombia's peace process. He studied at several esteemed institutions, including Universidad Externado de Colombia, University of Salamanca, UCLouvain, the High School of Public Administration of Colombia (ESAP), and Pontifical Xavierian University, gaining expertise in economics and public policy. Petro's shift from guerrilla fighter to legitimate politician began after his release from military detention in 1985. He entered politics successfully, first serving as a councilman in Zipaquirá, then winning a seat in the Chamber of Representatives in 1991. He continued to rise politically through the Senate, representing the Alternative Democratic Pole (PDA) party after getting the second-most votes in the 2006 parliamentary elections. However, disagreements with PDA leadership led him to start the Humane Colombia movement. He gained executive experience as mayor of Bogotá, elected in 2011 and serving until 2015. During this time, he launched various urban reform initiatives and environmental policies, which became key to his political identity. Petro ran for president in 2010, 2018, and successfully in 2022. His 2010 campaign ended in fourth place, while in 2018, he made it to the runoff election but lost to Iván Duque. The 2022 election was decisive, as he beat Rodolfo Hernández Suárez in the second round on June 19, becoming Colombia's 35th president and first leftist leader in recent democratic history.

Before Fame

Growing up in Colombia during a time of major social and political turmoil, Petro faced widespread inequality, violence, and limited democratic opportunities for left-wing movements. The 1970s and early 1980s in Colombia saw the rise of various guerrilla groups reacting to political exclusion and social marginalization. Petro joined the M-19 movement as a teenager, a group that stood out from other insurgent groups because of its urban focus and nationalist, rather than Marxist-Leninist, ideology. The organization became well-known for bold actions like the 1980 seizure of the Dominican Republic embassy and the 1985 occupation of the Palace of Justice, although Petro's specific involvement in these incidents is unclear. His time in M-19 coincided with Colombia's shift towards democracy and peace talks, allowing him to take advantage of transitional justice mechanisms that let former fighters enter legitimate politics.
