Hellen Onsando Obiri, born December 13, 1989, in Kisii, Kenya, is a renowned middle- and long-distance runner who has achieved remarkable success in athletics. She's the only woman to win world titles in indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country running, showing her skill and dominance in different competitions.
Obiri's track career highlights include two Olympic silver medals in the 5,000 meters at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She became a world champion in the 5,000m twice, in 2017 and 2019, setting a championship record in the latter. She also earned a bronze in the 1,500m at the 2013 World Championships and a silver in the 10,000m in 2022. At the Tokyo Olympics, she just missed a medal in the 10,000m, finishing fourth.
In indoor events, Obiri won the 3,000m title at the 2012 World Indoor Championships and got a silver in 2014. Her cross country skills shone when she won the 2019 World Cross Country championship. She also made a mark as a road racer, standing fifth on the world all-time list for the half marathon.
Obiri moved to marathon running later on, winning the 2023 Boston Marathon in just her second try at the distance.
