Biography

Htin Kyaw was born on July 20, 1946, in Kungyangon Township, Myanmar, into a family with strong ties to literature and politics. His father, Min Thu Wun, was a well-known poet and writer who played a major role in Myanmar's literary scene. Growing up in this environment, Htin Kyaw developed interests in technology and public service, which would later shape his career.

After finishing his early education in Myanmar, Htin Kyaw went abroad for further studies, earning degrees in economics and computer science. He spent a lot of time in the United Kingdom, where he gained knowledge in computer systems and technology management. On returning to Myanmar, he worked in various technical and administrative roles, gaining experience in both the private sector and government during the country's long period of military rule.

Htin Kyaw's political career began through his involvement with the National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi. His technical skills and administrative experience made him an important part of the party's leadership. When Myanmar started its move toward civilian rule in the 2010s, after decades of military control, Htin Kyaw became a trusted figure among democratic supporters.

In March 2016, Htin Kyaw was elected President of Myanmar by the country's parliament, becoming the first civilian to hold office since the military coup of 1962. His presidency was a historic moment for Myanmar, representing the result of years of democratic efforts led by the NLD. Because of constitutional restrictions, Aung San Suu Kyi couldn't take the presidency, making Htin Kyaw's role especially important as a link between the military and civilian democratic forces.

Htin Kyaw served as president until March 2018, when he resigned for health reasons. During his time in office, he worked to implement democratic reforms while managing the tricky balance between civilian government and military power that continued to affect Myanmar's politics. His administration faced many challenges, including ethnic conflicts, economic development needs, and the ongoing Rohingya crisis, which attracted international attention and criticism.

Before Fame

Htin Kyaw grew up during a time when Myanmar was finding its footing after gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1948. His family's literary prominence, thanks to his father Min Thu Wun, a well-known writer, gave him early exposure to intellectual circles and political debates.

The military coup in 1962 changed Myanmar's direction, starting decades of authoritarian rule. Htin Kyaw went abroad for his education, gaining technical skills that became important when Myanmar began to open up politically in the 2000s and 2010s.
