Biography

Hua Guofeng (1921-2008) was a Chinese Communist politician who led the Chinese Communist Party from 1976 to 1981. He was Mao Zedong's chosen successor during one of China's most turbulent political times. Born Su Zhu in Jiaocheng County, he joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938 at the age of 17 and was a guerrilla fighter in both the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. His political career took off in Hunan Province, where he became party secretary of Xiangtan in 1948, an area that included Mao's hometown of Shaoshan. This connection to Mao's homeland helped his future career advancement. Hua's effective administration and loyalty during the Cultural Revolution gained him national attention, rising to the national level in the early 1970s. He took control of the Ministry of Public Security in 1973 and became vice premier in 1975. After Premier Zhou Enlai died in January 1976, Mao named Hua as premier and first vice chairman of the Communist Party, essentially making him his successor. After Mao died in September 1976, Hua quickly consolidated power by arranging the arrest of the Gang of Four in October 1976 with the help of security chief Wang Dongxing and key allies like Li Xiannian and Luo Qingchang. This move removed his biggest rivals and made him China's top leader. Hua was the only Chinese leader to hold the positions of party chairman, premier, and chairman of the Central Military Commission all at once. But his focus on continuing Mao's policies through the 'Two Whatevers' approach conflicted with practical leaders like Deng Xiaoping who wanted economic reform. Although he ended the most extreme policies of the Cultural Revolution, Hua's adherence to Maoist ideas weakened his position as Deng and his allies gained power within the party, eventually leading to Hua losing power between 1978 and 1981.

Before Fame

Born into a peasant family in Jiaocheng County, Shanxi Province, Su Zhu took the name Hua Guofeng when he joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He grew up during a tough time for China, marked by foreign invasions, civil wars, and social unrest, which set the stage for the Communist revolution. As a young guerrilla fighter, he directly experienced the violence of the Japanese occupation and the following civil war between the Communists and Nationalists. In 1948, he was appointed as the party secretary of Xiangtan, managing an area that included Shaoshan, Mao Zedong's birthplace. It was here that he showed the administrative skills and political talent that would draw the attention of senior party leaders and Mao himself.
