Idrissa Gana Gueye was born on 26 September 1989 in Dakar, Senegal. He started his football journey at Diambars, a well-known football academy in Senegal that has produced many professional players. In 2008, he moved to Europe to join the reserve team of French club Lille OSC. His time in the academy showed his tenacity and technical skills, which became key traits in his career as a defensive midfielder.

Gueye joined Lille's first team in 2010 and quickly became an important part of their midfield. During the 2010–11 season, he was with the Lille squad that achieved a remarkable Ligue 1 and Coupe de France double, a highlight in the club's history. He stayed with Lille until 2015, building his reputation as an effective ball-winning midfielder in French football.
