Biography

Imelda Remedios Visitación Trinidad Romuáldez Marcos was born on July 2, 1929, in Manila, Philippines. She went to the Philippine Women's University and became well-known in the 1950s as a beauty queen and singer. Her marriage to Ferdinand Marcos in 1954 led her into Philippine politics and public life. When Ferdinand became president in 1965, Imelda became the First Lady of the Philippines, a position she held until 1986, using it to gain significant political power.

During her husband's two-decade rule, Imelda Marcos held power beyond the usual ceremonial duties. She was the Governor of Metro Manila from 1975 to 1986 and was also the Minister of Human Settlements, commissioning large architectural and cultural projects using public funds. These projects, known for their size and cost, were often criticized as part of her 'edifice complex.' She also engaged in extensive international diplomacy, meeting world leaders like Muammar Gaddafi and Mao Zedong, and received many foreign honors, including the Order of the Precious Crown, the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, and the Grand Star of the Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria.

The Marcos regime ended with the People Power Revolution in February 1986, which forced Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos into exile in Hawaii. Ferdinand Marcos died in exile in 1989. Imelda returned to the Philippines in 1991 after President Corazon Aquino allowed the family to return to face charges. She and her husband are recognized by the Guinness World Records for the 'Greatest Robbery of a Government,' with the couple estimated to have stolen between US$5 billion and US$10 billion from the Filipino state during their rule. By 2018, about $3.6 billion of those assets had been recovered by the Philippine government.

Despite facing many legal cases, Imelda Marcos got back into politics and was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives, serving multiple terms representing Leyte. In 2018, she was convicted of corruption charges related to her time as governor of Metro Manila, although the conviction was under appeal. Her son, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., known as Bongbong Marcos, was elected President of the Philippines in 2022, bringing the Marcos family back to the country's highest office. Imelda Marcos became internationally known not only for her political activities but also for her lavish personal collections, including an estimated 3,000 pairs of shoes found at the Malacañang Palace after the family left the country in 1986.

Before Fame

Imelda Romuáldez was born into the well-known Romuáldez family in the Visayas region, though their finances were reportedly modest during her childhood. She grew up in Leyte province after her family moved there and went on to study at the Philippine Women's University in Manila. Before her marriage and political rise, she worked briefly in a music store and gained public attention for her looks and singing voice, earning the nickname 'Rose of Tacloban.'

In the late 1940s and 1950s, the Philippines was a newly independent nation recovering from World War II's devastation and dealing with political instability, including the Huk Rebellion. In this environment of post-colonial nation-building and political networking, Imelda Romuáldez matured. Her family's connections and personal charm led her into power circles in Manila, resulting in her whirlwind eleven-day courtship and marriage to rising politician Ferdinand Marcos in 1954.
